James Manby Gully (1808-1883) British physician who practised first in London then in Malvern, Worcestershire, where he specialised in hydrotherapy. His reputation was damaged by connection with the scandal of the Bravo murder case of 1876, at the time of this cartoon. Gully published 'The Water Cure in Chronic Disease' (1846). He was the model for Dr Gullson in Charles Reade's 'reforming' novel 'It is Never Too Late to Mend' (1856), later produced as a play. Cartoon from 'Vanity Fair'. (London, 5 August 1876).

Portrait of Johannes Le Francq van Berkhey. The person portrayed is on a chair. On the table a bust of Willem de Zwijger and a print with the portrait of Pieter Adriaansz. Van der Werff, mayor of Leiden during the 80-year war. Behind him a wall paneling with an oval in which two crucified keys from the city weapon of Leiden. On the table are also a hat with plume, inkwell and a sheet of paper. The portrait carries a dark knee pants and stockings and shoes with buckles. In his right hand that rests on the bust, he has a goose feather, a diamond-shaped small object in the left hand. To his neck a chain with a hanger in the shape of an anchor. Under his left foot, a viper winds. Portrait of the portrayed signature.
