Georges Méliès was a French illusionist and filmmaker famous for leading many technical and narrative developments in the earliest days of cinema. Méliès, a prolific innovator in the use of special effects, accidentally discovered the substitution stop trick in 1896, and was one of the first filmmakers to use multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand-painted color in his work. Because of his ability to seemingly manipulate and transform reality through cinematography, Méliès is sometimes referred to as the first 'Cinemagician'.

'Landru - Bluebeard of France!', 1921, (1933). French serial killer Henri Désiré Landru (1869-1922), nicknamed 'The Bluebeard of Gambais', killed at least ten women (and one man) between 1915 and 1919. The police concluded that Landru had met or been in romantic correspondence with 283 women during the First World War. He was tried for 11 murders, found guilty and executed by guillotine on 25 February 1922. The true number of his victims, whose remains were never found, was almost certainly higher. Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English writer of adventure fiction set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. He was also involved in agricultural reform throughout the British Empire. This English novelist is best known for his romantic adventure King Solomons Mines, published in 1885. He was also a practical farmer and was part of the literary reaction against domestic realism that has been called a romance revival.
