Future Is Bright For Flying Boats Within the next few years giant flying-boats would come back into their own on long ocean flights, Mr. E. D. Clarke, managing director of Saunders-Roe, predicted today, when he arrived by BOAC Constellation from London. Saunders-Roe are making three 140-ton, 100-passenger Princess flying-boats for British Overseas Airways. Mr. Clarke said the new prop jet engine had enabled flying boats to travel at high speed. "The route from England to South America has been surveyed for the Princesses," said Mr. Clarke. April 21, 1950.

Crookshank in Cabinet to be Deputy House Leader -- Captain The Rt. Hon. H.F.C. Crookshank, M.P., whose appointment to a post in Mr. Churchill's new cabinet is announced today (Tuesday Captain Crookshank is to be minister of Health and deputy leader (to Mr. Eden) of the house of Commons. Now 58, he has been prominent in the Commons since he was first returned for Gainsborough in 1924. Born in Cairo and educated at Eton, he threw up a successful career in the Diplomatic Service for politics. October 30, 1951.

William Somerset Maugham (25 January 1874 - 16 December 1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. Among his short stories, some of the most memorable are those dealing with the lives of Western, mostly British, colonists in the Far East. They typically express the emotional toll the colonists bear by their isolation. 'Rain', 'Footprints in the Jungle', and 'The Outstation' are considered especially notable. Maugham was one of the most significant travel writers of the inter-war years, and can be compared with contemporaries such as Evelyn Waugh and Freya Stark. His best efforts in this line include 'The Gentleman in the Parlour', dealing with a journey through Burma, Siam, Cambodia and Vietnam, and 'On a Chinese Screen', a series of very brief vignettes that might have been sketches for stories left unwritten.
