The Artist's Sister Lola, 1899-1900. Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). Oil on canvas; framed: 62.5 x 54 x 8 cm (24 5/8 x 21 1/4 x 3 1/8 in.); unframed: 46.7 x 37.5 cm (18 3/8 x 14 3/4 in.). Picasso painted this portrait of his sister when he was about 18 years old and just discovering avant-garde art through his association with the modernista artists of the Els 4 Gats (Four Cats) café in Barcelona. The evocative colors and melting forms suggest the influence of El Greco, a painter abhorred by academics but admired by Spanish modernists. Lola's mantilla may allude to the family's Andalusian roots in southern Spain.

Portrait of a Woman in Gray ca. 1865 Edgar Degas French This beguiling sitter is depicted as if in a transitory moment, seemingly about to rise from the sofa, a slight smile on her lips. Degas rarely painted a face that reflects such good humor and calm. The woman is unidentified, but may well have been someone the artist knew intimately. He executed few commissioned portraits, preferring instead to depict family and friends, and seldom sold the portraits that he did paint. Mademoiselle Nys 1899 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec French Little is known about this plucky woman wearing a dramatic, wide-shouldered dress. The inscription at upper right dedicates the portrait to the Nys family, and the sitter has historically been identified as Mademoiselle Nys. She may be one of the many acquaintances who posed for Lautrec; at around the time he made this work, friends also tried to help the artist secure important portrait commissions, but society women soon fled in dismay from their sittings, after suffering insult..
