Pat Garrett (1850-1908), sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, captured Billy the Kid on December 20, 1880. After his trial and death sentence, the Kid escaped in April 1881. Garrett tracked him down in Fort Sumner, NM, ambushed and killed the Kid in a hotel room on July 14, 1881.
