President Cleveland Heads Seaward For First Trail -- The S.S.President Cleveland, largest passenger vessel ever built on the Pacific Coast, sticks her bow out through the Golden Gate here today and heads seaward for her first day of trials. The Cleveland her midsection cut by the shadow cast by the Golden Gate Bridge, looks huge. She displaces 23,000 tons, is 610 feet long, carries 550 passengers and a crew of 340. December 8, 1947. The Royal Navy during the Second World War The 'Lily' air strip in the sea off Lamlash, Scotland. The photograph was taken during tests with the 'Lily' experimental air strip, invented by Mr R M Hamilton and consisting of hexagonal buoyancy drums hinged together to form a flexible landing surface for aircraft at sea. It is 520 ft long and 60 ft across.
