This illustration of Wright's biplane (the rear section) dates to the early 1920s. Known as the Wright Flyer, it was the brainchild of the two Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, who experimented with it on a desolate sandy plain at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The first actual flight was made in September of 1902. The plane stayed afloat for two minutes. They continued experimenting and on September 10, 1908, Orville Wright remained in the air for 62 minutes and 15 seconds at Fort Meyer, near Washington.
