Night Rain at the Double-Shelf Stand, from the series Eight Parlor Views (Zashiki hakkei) ca. 1766 Suzuki Harunobu Japanese This beguiling scene of a girl lulled by the sound of a softly boiling tea cauldron, set on a portable hearth of the type used during the summer, is one of Harunobus Eight Parlor Views (Zashiki hakkei). It playfully alludes to “Night Rain,” one of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers in China, a venerable theme in both Chinese and Japanese painting. Here the summer mood intrinsic to that landscape is transposed to the interior of an Edo (Tokyo) house of pleasure. Harunobus work is distinctive for its subtle tonality, achieved by mixing pigments rather than by superimposing two printed colors.. Young Man Reading over a Young Womans Shoulder. A courtesan sits on the steps of a teahouse, reading a letter, while standing behind her is a young man, who is obviously curious to know its contents. Inscribed within a cloud-shaped cartouche along the upper edge of the print is a poem reading: ‘Our meeting at night at Iwabashi ends sadly at dawn, oh God of Katsuragi.

Snowball. Five women and a girl watch as three others roll a large snowball before a grey background with whirling snowflakes. This print is by the same artist as the quintych that Breitner owned (adjacent). Breitner was fascinated by such scenes; he loved depicting the city in the snow. Moreover, the print presents a variety of poses of women in kimonos.

The beach at Suma, with boats sailing in Osaka Bay, is visible beyond the open shōji, the veranda, and a stand of pines. A design of fishnets adorns the kimono of the central figure. This left-hand sheet from a print triptych recasts the episode of Genjis exile in Suma with stylish ladies in Edo-period clothing in place of the male companions who accompanied the protagonist in the tale. The artist, Chōbunsai Eishi, born into a high-ranking samurai family, would have been familiar with such up-to-date fashions worn by Edos social elite.. Date: ca. 1795.This print is one of the most exquisite ukiyo-e prints featuring women. The subject matter of "Kayoi Komachi," inscribed in the upper right corner, is drawn from a tragic Noh play. The poet Ono no Komachi promises to meet her ardent suitor Fukakusa Shojo if he agrees to spend a hundred nights on the stepstool of an oxcart. After ninety-nine nights, he dies. This print is a parody of the popular story. A courtesan is on her way home from visiting her favorite customer, knowing that their meetings will eventually end. Both Fukakusa Shojo, in the Noh play, and the courtesan in this print share a profound sense of promise unfulfilled. Here, the mistiness of the night (achieved by means of an ink spray) and the woman's disheveled hair are suggestive of their romantic lingering. Mu

Parody of the Third Princess and Kashiwagi: Chapter 50: A Hut in the Eastern Provinces” 1858, second month Utagawa Kunisada Japanese Through his illustrations of A Fraudulent Murasaki’s Rustic Genji, single-sheet prints, triptychs, and diptychs, Utagawa Kunisada was more prolific than any other ukiyo-e artist in the creation of Genji-themed prints. This pair of prints is thirty-seventh in a group of thirty-eight diptychs from the series Lasting Impressions of a Late Genji Collection (Genji goshū yojō), published between 1857 and 1861. The most complex and visually satisfying of Kunisada’s Genji images, this series was lavishly printed on thick paper to allow special effects such as blind printing (karazuri) or textile-weave printing (nunomezuri). The metallic pigments, the burnishing (shōmenzuri), and the overall luxurious presentation usually characterize deluxe privately published prints called surimono.. The Keizerin Kômyôgô; Kômyôgô; Three beauties; SAN BEIN. The Keizerin Kômyôgô dressed in a summer kimono (Yukata) looks at a big path. Kômyôgô was the woman of Emperor Shômu (701-756) and has founded the public bath houses in Japan. One day she was tested by Buddha when he appeared for her as a leper. Locations, celebrated sites called meisho, often evoked a season, a certain emotion or a famous historical or fictional event. The accumulated associations were so strong that a place name became a synedoche, an indispensable device for infusing the short poetic forms of Japan with broader meaning. Ukiyo-e artists, too, made use of such allusions, both to the place and its use in classical literature, to expand and to play upon meaning.The six Tamagawa ("Jewel Rivers")Ide, Mishima (or Kinuta), Noji, Kōya, Chōfu and Nodawere a non-traditional meisho subject that became popular in the early eighteenth century as the theme for poetry, song and dance.
