Kiyomizu Hall in Ueno Park was founded in 1631 as part of an ambitious plan to establish a great Buddhist temple complex in Edo and to provide spiritual defense from the northeast, the direction from which evil spirits were thought to come. The hall is celebrated for the cherry blossoms in its vicinity and the view it offers. However, even in Hiroshige's day the actual panorama was less spectacular than is suggested by this print, which exaggerates the width of the veranda extending out from the temple and shows the pine trees as towering giants. Woodblock print, Image: 13 3/16 x 8 3/4 in. (33.5 x 22.2 cm). This scene depicts the area known as Yamashita ("Below the Mountain") in Ueno Park. The abstract band of pink and yellow represents the famous cherry blossoms of Kan'eiji Temple ("The Mountain"). The small shrine hidden in the woods is Gōjō Tenjin, and the adjacent restaurant is Iseya, which advertises a rice dish blended with pickled shiso, a minty herb. The procession of parasol-covered women in the lower left corner may be a group of ladies-in-waiting. Stopping to gaze at them is a group of commoners, somewhat awkwardly diminished in size. This print is one of three in the series that have been ascribed to Hiroshige II. Asian Art 10th month of 1858

This view is to the northeast from the precincts of Yushima Tenjin Shrine, looking out over the Shinobazu Pond. The main sanctuary of the shrine is off to the left. Pictured is a side approach that could be reached by the two different stone stairways shown here, either the one on the lower right or the one by which the two figures in the center are ascending. Yushima Tenjin was one of the oldest shrines in Edo and was dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the patron saint of learning and the arts. It is still devoutly patronized by rich and poor alike. Like many favorite shrines and temples, it served as a major center of recreation in Hiroshige's day. Asian Art 4th month of 1856
