Associate Administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Thomas Zurbuchen, announces the official name, Perseverance, for the rover formerly known as Mars 2020, Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Va. Zurbuchen made the final selection of the new name following a nationwide naming contest conducted in 2019 that drew more than 28,000 essays by K-12 students from every U.S. state and territory. The plarn was donated to be woven into mats for homeless veterans. The two-day Earth Day event featured approximately 50 exhibitors offering information on a variety of topics, including electric vehicles, sustainable lighting, renewable energy, Florida-friendly landscaping tips, Florida’s biking trails and more.

Girls Night In was held at Goddard on Nov 4-5, 2016.  This is a pilot program which reinvigorates,inspires, and engages high school girls who may be struggling or not fully engaged in STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) education.  The program allowed NASA women toshare and demonstrate the work they do, provide the girls an opportunity to completely immerse themselves in Goddard science, technology, engineering and math as well as providethem activities that will challenge and promote knowledge and discovery.  Goddard invites other NASA centers tolearn from this pilot program and work towards a simultaneous multicenter event in the future. University students and their mentors were at Kennedy to participate in a student/mentor panel, hear from speakers, get a behind-the-scenes tour of Kennedy Space Center, dine with an astronaut and receive awards. During Swarmathon University Challenge IV, students developed algorithms for robotic swarms that are robust and adaptable like the foraging strategies of ant colonies. The fourth and final Swarmathon was a combined virtual and physical competition.

In the second annual Swarmathon competition at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, students were asked to develop computer code for the small robots called "Swarmies." The students programmed the robots to look for "resources" in the form of cubes with AprilTags, similar to barcodes. A team from Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, captured first place and a $5,000 cash prize.
