Nude female figure holding a vase on her head ca. 945-525 B.C. Third Intermediate Period-Late Period This figure is part of a repertoire of figures created in a distinctive spotted faience from dynasty 22 into dynasty 26. The center of production was the eastern Delta, in particular Bubastis and Tanis; this was an area where Near Eastern peoples had long been interwoven in the population; at this time it was also a center for the settlement of Libyan tribal peoples. Possibly these conditions influenced this particular production. Through their appearance, the figures all allude to the goddess Bastet. In particular, many details evoke the myth termed "The Return of the Faraway Goddess." The feline / leonine Bastet was angry with the god Re and left Egypt for Nubia. Re wanted her back again, so he sent the god Thoth, who, taking the form of a monkey, lured her back with fables. Harpokrates Amulet 1086-30 B.C. Third Intermediate Period-Ptolemaic Period This small figurine depicts a naked male figure in a curious half-seated, half-standing position. His nudity and the lock of hair on the side of his head signify that he is a child. He wears the double crown, which identifies him as the god Harpokrates (Horus the Child). Black paint was used to accentuate his side lock. The intriguing position of his body is known from other depictions of this god and can be explained by common images that depict him seated on the lap of his mother Isis. Worker Shabti of Nany. Dimensions: H. 8.6 × W. 3.2 × D. 1.8 cm (8.6 × 3.2 × 1.8 cm). Dynasty: Dynasty 21. Reign: reign of Psusennes I. Date: ca. 1050 B.C..Seven shabti boxes were interred with Nany; five came to New York in the division of finds (30.3.26-.30), two of them are now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. All are made of sycamore wood and have high ends and flat lids. A white stucco wash was applied after the lids were closed. The shabtis, made of faience, were packed tightly in each box, in an upright position. They are of two types: foremen and workmen, with a ratio of one forman to ten workers (see 30.3.28a-h). Statuette of the goddess Neith 664-525 B.C. Late Period Neith was patron goddess of Sais and of the Dynasty 26 pharaohs, She has elements of a war goddess, and was regarded as a great creator goddess. Not surprisingly, cupreous statuary of the goddess proliferated during Dynasty 26. This example is a fine example of the facial style of mid Dynasty 26, and of the Saite female figural style with its heavy bosom and long slim hips.The inscription records two beneficiaries, Nesnaisut and Pediese, whose relationship is not clear. They donated the statue in honor of the goddess at an unknown temple, but perhaps in Sais or Memphis, with the assistance of a temple doorkeeper (porter) Wahibreemkhebyt. The fluid, athletic modeling of his body and details of his costume indicate a date in mid-Dynasty 18. In fact, the statuette represents the great king Tuthmosis III, as is revealed by traces of his prenomen (or throne name), Menkheperre, on the belt buckle.This figure is the earliest known New Kingdom royal bronze statuette and, with a few Late Middle Kingdom copper and copper-alloy precursors, it initiates the tradition of bronze statuary in Egypt. Thoth amulet 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Amulets often represent deities in order to invoke their protection and specific powers. Such amulets were used by the living and often placed on mummies as well. The piece here depicts the god Thoth as a man with an ibis-head. Thoth was the god of knowledge and writing, and he was thought to have healing powers. Thoth amulets were popular mummy amulets, which possibly relates to his healing powers and to his role as recorder of the final judgment, in which it was determined if the deceased had lived a virtuous life.. Date: 150-1 BC.Striding draped figures appear in the Egyptian statuary repertoire in the mid-second century B.C.; such statues seem often to have stood in front of temples pylons. Possibly the diadem worn by this figure indicates a priestly office.Although only now appearing in statuary, the figure's distinctive garments seem to have actually been worn in Egypt already for some centuries. The ensemble has three elements: a sleeved tunic is worn closest to the body; over that is wrapped a long fringed skirt whose edge is visible between the legs; finally, a shawl is draped over the upper body in such a way as to cover the left arm and pass under the right, with its ends gathered into the left fist.A new level of integration of Hellenistic influence emerges in this period and can be clearly observed in many of striding draped male figures. Comparisons to complete figures with similar close-fitting, short hair determined, however, that this head belonged to a female figure. The woman was most probably nude, and the absence of a wig and garment made her a representative of femininity in general. Her presence among Khety's burial equipment provided him not with a concubine (another out-dated interpretation), but with the means to be reborn after death. In its waning years the Ptolemaic Dynasty was struggling for stability and was increasingly dependent on Rome. As though seeking to transcend the difficulties of the period, Ptolemy XII took the title Neos Dionysus, the New Dionysus/ Osiris.” A number of sculptures exist depicting him as an emphatically youthful figure. Wrestler 300 CE-522 CE Japan. This wrestler or rikishi is wearing a simple headband and a wrestlerís harness. He stands solidly on two feet, with a hand on his hip and the other raised to show his strength. His chest is particularly barrel-shaped, harking back to the simple tube-shaped haniwa, from which more elaborate forms developed. The right foot is a recent restoration.Other haniwa in the form of wrestlers exist. Though the precise role of wrestling in this period is unclear, it is mentioned in the first written record in Japan, from the eighth century, in relation to shrine rituals or as part of celebrations to honor foreign guests.. In real life, one of their major functions was to accompany dancers, ritual and secular. One of the figures plays a tambourine, the other probably a triangle. Assyrian This carved head of a male figure was found with several other ivory heads in the Throne Room of the Burnt Palace at Nimrud, including that of a female figure also in the Metropolitan Museums collection (MMA 54.117.8). It was probably blackened through exposure to fire when the palace complexes at Nimrud were sacked during the final defeat of Assyria at the end of the seventh century B.C. Originally, this piece may have been part of a composite statuette made of various materials and overlaid with gold foil. The mans long hair, parted at the center, falls in thick braids and is wrapped by a thin, double fillet. His small mouth and large eyes, which are drilled to receive inlays in colored glass or semiprecious stones, resemble those frequently found on North Syrian ivories. Marble female figure 2300-2200 B.C. Cycladic The remains of an ancient repair are of special interest. The head had broken from the long thin neck. A channel was cut into the sides of the neck and the head and then filled with lead. This technique was an established means of joining pieces in the first millennium B.C. Statuette of a kneeling man, known as The Worshipper of Larsa. Dedicated by an inhabitant of Larsa to the god Amurru for the life of Hammurabi. Bronze and gold, early 2nd millenium BC. This votive statuette has an inscription, in one of the sides, dedicated to the Sumerian god Martu (Akkadian Amurru). The front features a small bowl, serving as a libation receptacle. Date: 3rd century B.C..Votive "temple boy" figures are more common in limestone, and small terracotta such as this are relatively rare. Various interpretations have been put on the purpose of the figures, but it seems likely that they were placed in temples to mark a rite of passage in the boy's life and secure for him divine protection. But, whatever the meaning of the figures, it is clear that they represent a Cypriot custom that drives not form the Greek world but form that of the Near East. This illustration dates to 1898 and shows a statue of Thalia in the Vatican Museum. Erato was honored as the Muse of comedy. In Greek and Roman mythology, the Muses were nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (goddess of memory). There were honored as the patrons of arts and sciences. Calliope was the head muse, and Apollo, the god of prophecy and song, was their leader.

Upper Part of the Seated Statue of a Queen ca. 1580-1550 B.C. New Kingdom This image of a queen wearing the vulture headdress over a voluminous tripartite wig was split off its backslab in antiquity, most probably by somebody who wanted to make use of this conveniently shaped piece of stone for other purposes. It is conceivable that a king (her father, son, or husband) was originally represented seated beside her. The sculpture has been identified tentatively as Queen Ahmes Nefertari, mother of Amenhotep I, and dated to the reign of Ahmose (ca. 1550-1525 B.C.) at the very beginning of the 18th Dynasty. However, the remarkable flatness of the face and wig is familiar from certain works created during the 17th Dynasty (compare the seated statue of Siamun, 65.115), and the intriguing interplay of fleshy musculature in the lower part of the face is even reminiscent of late Middle Kingdom images. Statuette of a standing goddess Greek, Boeotian ca. 525-500 BC Colorful details painted on a white slip accentuate the elaborate makeup, accessories, and drapery adorning this female figure. Yellow ocher applied to the headdress, earrings, and garment evokes gold, and red ocher painted on her neck probably depicts a necklace of pomegranates, a symbol of death and rebirth. The headdress with rays suggests the woman is a goddess, perhaps Persephone, queen of the Underworld. (94.0 x 27.3 x 28.6 cm), Wood, horn, brass tacks, metalwork, glass beads, fiber, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 19th century, In a small house at the edge of a Songye village, a ritual expert would have kept a large power figure. Contrary to the much smaller personal power figures, these communally owned ones were invoked for general welfare and protection against illness, sorcery, and war. The three horns atop this figures head once contained substances that enhanced its mystical power. When impending danger was sensed, two men would carry the figure through the village to ward off evil, holding it with wooden poles passed under its armpits.

Figurine of a Seated Woman ca. 3450-3200 B.C. Late Naqada II-possibly early Naqada III Representations of men and women in formal poses but executed in an abbreviated style are among the earliest examples of Egyptian sculpture. These figurines were mostly made from unbaked clay, pottery, bone, or ivory. Details, such as body hair, clothing, and tattoos, were incised into or painted onto their surfaces. This decoration emphasized elements of a figures gender or the possible function of the object. Figurines are very rare in this early period and because we do not know the detailed provenience of many examples, scholars must infer how such figurines were used by the Predynastic people that created them..
