Limestone statue of a male votary first half of the 5th century B.C. Cypriot The figure carries an aryballos (a small oil bottle) in his left hand and wears a sword sheath at his right side. The textured sash worn over his left shoulder is unusual. The headband decorated with rosettes and his well-arranged clothing, complete with a belt tied in a Herakles knot, imply that he is represented as a participant in a procession or festival - a fitting pose for a votive statue.. Ptah. Dimensions: H. 8.5 cm (3 3/8 in.); W. 2.9 cm (1 1/8 in.); D. 2.8 cm (1 1/8 in.). Date: 664-30 B.C..This statuette depicts Ptah, the chief god of Egypt's capital city Memphis and master craftsman of the gods. The facial features are somewhat unbalanced, particularly the wide-set and unevenly carved eyes; nonetheless Ptah is easy to identify by his tight-fitting cap, here with a streamer attached at the back, his straight beard (different from the usual curved divine beard on other gods), and enveloping mummiform garment. The garment has a shallow stiff upper edge along the back of the neck, a feature that occurs with some regularity also on Osiris statuettes, but its meaning is unclear. Commonly Ptah holds a scepter that combines the symbols for life (ankh), dominion (was), and stability (djed), but here he holds only the was scepter, hearkening back to earlier representations of the god. Mummy Mask A.D. 60-70 Roman Period Plaster masks seem to have been particularly popular in Middle Egypt. They develop of course from Egyptian traditiions, but appearances could be strongly individualized and Roman fashions of hairstyle, dress and jewelry were followed to varying degrees. This mask is very similar to a group from Meir and almost certainly came from that site. The woman is represented as if lying flat upon her bier. She wears a long Egyptian-style wig made of plant fibers, a deep-red tunic with black clavi (stripes), and jewelry that includes a lunula (crescent pendant), and snake bracelets. At the lower edge of her tunic are two holes, which were used for attaching the mask to the mummy.The back of her head is then represented as resting on a decorated support. Over the top of her head is a gilded wreath encircling a scarab beetle that represents the sun appearing at dawn, a metaphor for rebirth. Head of a male or female figure ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This piece is carved in the round from a section of elephant tusk and could represent the head of a male or a female figure. It was found with several other fragmentary statuettes in a storeroom at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was probably used to store tribute and booty collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. Two rectangular mortises cut into the flat reverse of the face suggest that this piece was originally part of a composite statuette made of various materials and painted or overlaid with gold foil. It was probably attached to another piece made out of wood or ivory that comprised the upper part and back of the head. The neck is curved, perhaps to fit into the collar of the joining chest. Female Figure 16th-19th century Inyai-Ewa people The ancient wood sculptures of the Inyai-Ewa and neighboring groups of the upper Korewori River, a southern tributary of the Sepik, are the earliest Melanesian woodcarvings to survive in any substantial numbers. Kept in rock shelters, which protected them from the elements, the figures were primarily created between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. They occur in several forms and portray a variety of supernatural beings. Broad, flat female images are, at times, identified as representations of two primordial sisters who helped to shape the world or as the female ancestors or founders ofparticular clans. Two-legged male figures also likely portray primordial clan ancestors. The most abundant Inyai-Ewa carvings are the one-legged male figures, known as aripa. Date: ca. 1802-1550 B.C..These tablets of unfired clay with attached crude faces were found as a group by the Museum's excavators at Lisht South in loose surface sand west of the mastaba of Senwosretankh, a high official and possibly the architect of the pyramid complex of Senwosret I (ca. 1961-1917 B. C.), east of which he erected his own very elaborate mastaba tomb (see acc. nos. 33.1.2 and other pieces). The mud figures and little coffin (acc. no. 33.1.66) that had contained some of them must have been buried, however, considerably later than the early twelfth dynasty tomb close to which they were found. Date: late 6th century B.C..The figure is elaborately dressed in a chiton (long undergarment), a himation (overgarment), sandals, a diadem, necklaces, earrings, and spiral bracelets with snake terminals. With her left hand she holds both her drapery and the handle of a mirror. She stands on a ledge that abutted on something else in back and that is supported by figures, of which two heads remain. This work figured prominently during the 1880s, which controversy raged over the interventions to which Cesnola had subjected his objects. The piece was clearly once part of a larger whole, and the illogical gesture of holding her garment and a mirror simultaneously indicates that there was also modern recutting. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The beautiful blue lapis lazuli figure represents a child god in a seated/reclining position, as he would have been held on his mother's lap. The child is distinguished from an adult gods by iconographic clues: his nudity and the thick sidelock on the right side of his head that is a sign of childhood. The detailed treatment of this small figure is notable: large eyes, smiling mouth, and the luxuriant lock growing naturally from his head evoke the beautiful promising child, while the rounded belly and prominent penis hint at his ability to bring about prosperity and abundance.Child gods grew in popularity and cult from the Third Intermediate Period onwards, rivaling even the most powerful and ancient gods, especially as temple offerings. The best known is Horus the Child (Harpokrates), who was the son of Isis and Osiris, but many others existed, including Khonsu the Child, Ihy, and Harsiese, among others. Thus it

Top of standard with male figure and flanking ibexes attacked by dogs ca. 1500-1100 B.C. Elamite One of a pair, this cast bronze element was attached to a pole by the curved tang at the bottom. A hollow ring with ropelike ridges and incised rosettes in between is surmounted by a solid-cast striding male figure wearing a knee-length belted garment and boots with upturned toes. A snake supports his front foot. He holds an object, possibly an animal, at his chest while raising the other hand in a gesture of supplication. He has both a mustache and beard, and his hair projects slightly at the front. He is flanked by two solid recumbent horned animals whose haunches are attacked by crouching dogs. The style of the male figure and the snake point to Elam as the place of manufacture. In this small amulet where the child-god is recognizable by the finger to his mouth, he also holds the knobby club of Herakles. The identification of Harpokrates and Herakles seems to go back to warrior characteristics the Egyptian god had acquired in earlier syncretisms with other Egyptian gods.
