The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage ca. 1874 Edgar Degas French There are three similar versions of this scene, and their precise relationship has bedeviled scholars for decades. The largest, painted in grisaille (Musée dOrsay, Paris), appeared in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. The two others, tentatively dated the same year, are in the Metropolitans collection. This painting probably preceded the version in pastel (29.100.39), which is more freely handled. The importance that Degas attached to the composition is evident in the preparatory drawings that he made for almost every figure, from the dancer scratching her back in the foreground to the woman yawning next to the stage flat. The Dancers Edgar Degas French About 1900 Degas revised a painting (Foundation E. G. Bührle Collection, Zürich) that he had made some twenty years earlier. This pastel, which reprises the composition, may well have been created during the modifications. Degas likely sold the pastel directly to the dealer Ambroise Vollard, who is recorded as the owner in 1914.. The Dancers. Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834-1917 Paris). Pastel and charcoal on paper. Woman with Three Girls József Rippl-Rónai (Hungarian, 1861-1927). Woman with Three Girls, ca. 1909. Oil on board, 24 1/8 x 36 3/4 in. (61.3 x 93.3 cm). Inspired by avant-garde techniques he observed while living in Paris in the last decade of the nineteenth century, József Rippl-Rónai developed a style that juxtaposed daubs of bright colors and compressed the figures, furnishings, and patterns of his tapestry-like paintings into a single plane. When he returned to Hungary in 1901, he combined these formal innovations with elements that would reflect a distinctive, modern Hungarian style. Here, he includes embroidered textiles and a still life of tulips, which were traditional symbols of Hungarian culture and identity. European Art ca. 1909
