In this example produced by Kohn & Adler, a Philadelphia hat manufacturer, the image not only depicts various styles of hats in the company's stock in 1880 but also supplies the names given to each one. The central rectangle is like a miniature with a list of golden lovers and a painted bow ribbon. Herein is a vase of painted mother-of-pearl with flowers of straw and a bird with real feathers. On the open frame, the motif of the vase with flowers is repeated in the central medallion and the support part of the outs. CloseThe parchment leaf shows a scene painted in gouache where a man in blue costume offers a basket with flowers to a lady in a green yellow dress. The fan has 24 consecutive legs that are held together with a purple satin ribbon. The three small cartouches against the upper edge and the large central cartouche contain Chineze figures in pavilions. The compartments are framed with a band in which feathers or spiral -like shapes. The background of the fan consists of a brown -black grain and with large red gold flowers. Only one mention of this specific type of fans are known and can be found in an advertisement from the Amsterdamsche Courant of 31 July 1798, in which a certain Pierre Felgines says that he has settled and 'makes, sells and amplifies all species from umbrella, umbrellas and green Waayers ... Then carriage suspension improved, coaches became more comfortable and people would promenade in an open carriage as well. Consequently parasols were adapted: a hinge in the middle of the stick enabled the parasol to be held conveniently over the shoulder while seated.Umbrella. Culture: American. Inherent stress on the materials along with age-related deterioration has meant that few early examples survive.
