The Muse of Painting 1870 John La Farge American By 1870, La Farge had moved away from his early realistic manner to a more decorative, academic style of easel painting. "The Muse of Painting" synthesizes the different and somewhat contradictory tendencies found in his work at this time. The landscape represents a site that artist painted frequently, the ridge behind Bishop Berkeley's Rock near his farm outside of Newport, Rhode Island. The figure belongs to the mainstream of nineteenth-century ideal painting, representing an allegory of the art of painting. In an odd twist, La Farge depicted the muse as an artist rather than as the inspiratrice of an artist. Her inspiration is the surrounding landscape of Newport, proving that nature is the true muse of painting. The landscape and overall composition are handled in highly decorative manner, mingling carefully observed details with dreamy, evocative colors.. The Muse of Painting 11379

Dancing girl (Columbine) ca. 1770 Doccia Porcelain Manufactory Italian The Meissen figure by Kändler (1974.232.1) served as a model for that made in the Ginori factory (1974.28.116). It is fascinating to observe some of the differences that exist between the German hard-paste figure with its admirable sharpness of modeling, and the Italian statuette with colors that sink into the soft-paste like footsteps in driven snow. One might also compare the plain base of the earlier model with the ornate rocaille base of the latter.. Dancing girl (Columbine). Italian, Florence. ca. 1770. Soft-paste porcelain. A 'harem' is not a bordello, seraglio or brothel, but refers to the women's quarters, usually in a polygynous household, which are forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and is typically associated in the Western world with the Ottoman Empire. Female seclusion in Islam is emphasized to the extent that any unlawful breaking into that privacy is haram ie, 'forbidden'. A Muslim harem does not necessarily consist solely of women with whom the head of the household has sexual relations (wives and concubines), but also their young offspring, other female relatives or odalisques, which are the concubines' servants. The harem may either be a palatial complex, as in Romantic tales, in which case it includes staff (women and eunuchs), or simply their quarters, in the Ottoman tradition separated from the men's selamlik. A hammam is a common bath house.
