Young Woman in Fantasy Costume. The young womans clothing is not in keeping with the fashions of Rembrandts day, but rather reflects styles of earlier centuries. The womans distinctive features - a domed forehead, slightly bulging eyes, andpronounced chin - are easily recognized in depictions of ancient goddesses and heroines that Rembrandtpainted in the 1630s. Thus the painting is not strictly a portrait, but a ‘tronie, or fantasy head.

The caption for this image, written about 1910, reads: "Mrs Campbell of Balliemore by Raeburn (1756-1823) in the National Gallery in Scotland. This is one of the finest of the many fine portraits by Raeburn in the Edinburgh Gallery." Sir Henry Raeburn (1756 - 1823) was a Scottish portrait painter. He served as Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland.
