According to the accompanying text, he wears a habit of sheet, without buttons on the supports and bags, (funeral costume for the summer) with six buttons on the fronts. On his left side a sweetheart decorated with a black crepe. Castor shoes. The buckles on the stocking bands and the shoes are made of bronze. A long tie (Cravate) falls over the jabot of the shirt. Cuffs and jabot are from Batist. Under the arm a big hat, garnished with a black crepe. The print is part of the 18th Cahier from Cabinet des Modes Ou Les Modes Nouvelles. The series consists of 72 fashion prints, issued by Buisson, Paris, November 15, 1785 - November 1, 1786.

The book was a continuation of the series on the costumes of the 12th to 15th centuries published by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri from 1830. Georges Duplessis (1834-1899) was curator of the Prints department at the Bibliotheque nationale. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard (1825-1902) was an artist, book illustrator, and interior designer for many public buildings and churches. He was named professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1874.
