Mrs. George Swinton epitomizes the painterly virtuosity that made John Singer Sargent one of the most fashionable portraitists in late-19th-century Europe and America. Extravagant color and brushwork were central to Sargentís success, as was his ability to present a refined and appealing image of his sitter. In Elizabeth ìElsieî Swintonís case, he accentuated her regal bearing and feminine dress. Sargent harmonized the realism of her face and body with bursts of impressionistic brushstrokes describing the shimmering, translucent fabric descending from her shoulder. Date: 1832.Married in 1827, Ruth and Samuel Shute were a husband-and-wife team of itinerant portrait painters working in New England and upstate New York. Although they initially painted independently, the couple collaborated on a series of oil and watercolor portraits beginning in 1832. Little is known about the sitter, who is identified only by the calling card in her right hand. An inscription on the back reveals each artist's contribution to the work, which was "Drawn by R.W. Shute and Painted by S. A. Shute." The couple characteristically mixed materials, combining graphite, watercolor, and applied gold foil, added here to emulate Miss Parker's jewelry. Fresh Air Winslow Homer (American, 1836-1910). Fresh Air, 1878. Watercolor heightened with white opaque watercolor, with scraping and selectively applied glaze, over charcoal on moderately thick, rough-textured wove paper, 20 1/16 x 14 in. (51 x 35.6 cm). Winslow Homer, who rose to national prominence in the 1860s for his magazine illustrations and oil paintings of modern American life, took up watercolor in the 1870s. Fresh Air is one of the most ambitious of an early series of plein air watercolors depicting fancifully dressed shepherdesses that Homer made at Houghton Farm, a patrons country estate in upstate New York. He created brilliant effects of light and atmosphere by exploiting the natural transparency of the medium and the brightness of the white paper. To achieve the subtle coloration in the sky, he applied overlapping washes of grays, pinks, and blues and then blotted them together. American Art 1878
