In addition, it would originally have been a very expensive purchase since it is woven entirely out of metallic threads, which were inherently more difficult to manipulate and costly. Coat 1868 American This boy's coat is a handsome example of a child's dressy outer garment to be worn when the child is on display. The garment is in excellent condition and shows very little wear. It is possible that it may have been worn by two children as the skirt was originally two inches longer, which changes the proportion of the cape to the skirt length of the coat. Dense bands of geometric motifs over the shoulders and vertical bands below alternating with drawnwork bands are quintessentially Romanian. The magnificent array and abundance of silver decorations used to adorn the jacket would have sparkled in flickering candlelight and indicated the status of the wearer who could afford such an expensive garment.. Ensemble American ca. 1893 This boy's ensemble encompasses the historicism that was so prevalent in the 1890s and 1900s. The shirt refers to those worn by partisans of King Charles I of England (reign 1625-49) known as Cavaliers. These gentlemen were well bred and their style consisted of long hair, colorful clothes with elaborate trimmings and lace collars and cuffs, and plumed hats. Their refined dress made them dandies of the time, as would this ensemble, when worn by a young boy. Obviously, this was a special-occasion garment, due to its pristine condition.

Probably the oldest corset in the collection, this example illustrates the upright shape of the back necessary to give the 18th century woman the desired stance. The rigid V-shaped flat front formed a base for the decorative stomacher, another essential part of a lady's wardrobe.
