Late Middle Kingdom-Early New Kingdom This group of beads was found in a heap west of the pyramid of Amenemhat I, apparently thrown there by plunderers. The scarab that has been strung in the center dates to mid to late Dynasty 13 and has been assigned to a workshop at the Delta site of Tell el-Dab'a (see Headband with Heads of Gazelles). It is inscribed with the letters p, t, and h, and with a papyrus plant, but this does not spell a name. The other elements on this string are ball beads and beads in the shape of cowrie shells.. The memoirs of Jahangir, for instance, record his decisions to wear certain pearls or rubies for important occasions, but the practice was not limited to royalty alonetravelers to India noted the quantity of jewelry worn by all members of society. Because very few of these pieces survive, most seventeenth-century jewelry is known only from paintings and written descriptions; extant pieces from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are much more numerous. This particular necklace, composed of diamonds, rubies, pearls, and imitation emeralds set in gold, might represent work for a new class of patrons, the British in India.. Necklace. 18th-19th century. Gold, diamonds, colorless sapphires, rubies, imitation emeralds (colorless rock crystal over green foil), and pearls. Attributed to India,
