Date: 1782.This sculpture is the sole remnant of an extraordinary fountain group acquired by Louis Philippe Joseph d'Orléans, duc de Chartres (the future duc d'Orléans), for his romantic "English" garden on the outskirts of Paris at Monceau (now the Parc Monceau). As described by a contemporary, the fountain consisted of a white marble basin, in the center of which was a woman bathing, in white marble, and behind her, in lead, a black servant woman pouring water over her mistress from a gilded ewer (see 32.100.159) Sadly, the group barely survived its owner's demise (the duke was guillotined in 1793) as the fountain was heavily vandalized during the Revolution.Houdon originally proposed the group as an acquisition for the crown, which declined to underwrite the expensive project. Saint Tarcisius ca. 1880 Alexandre Falguière French Investigations into early Christianity constantly renourished Roman Catholicism in the nineteenth century. A best-selling novel by the Irish-born cardinal Nicholas Patrick Wiseman, Fabiola, or the Church of the Catacombs (1854), widely translated, was Alexander Falguières immediate source for this sculpture. In the novel, the teenage acolyte Tarcisius is conveying the Host along the Appian Way when he is confronted by pagan playmates who order him to reveal it. He refuses and they stone him. Here, the fallen martyr exhibits a bloodied forehead as well as an expression of beatific rapture as he clutches the holy wafer in his arms, faithful to the end. The fatal paving stones lie at his elbow. A photograph in the Musée Rodin, Paris, shows how Falguière blocked out the pose using a live model, aged about fifteen, covered by massive drapery instead of a tunic and soft boots. Her left arm, which would have supported her body, is missing. The right arm is extended along her side, with the tips of her fingers resting lightly on her thigh. Faint bands at the woman's neck indicate creases; the subtle folds of flesh along the right side of the torso emphasize the full curves of her figure. Reclining figures are common among Greek terracottas, and the appearance of the posture in Mesopotamian sculpture may reflect the influence of Greek terracotta manufacturing centers along the eastern Mediterranean. The majority of Greek terracottas of this type are male, however, as are reclining figures depicted in Greco-Roman funerary reliefs. This photo dates to March 2018 in Palermo in Sicily. It shows the Motya Charioteer, which dates to around 350 B.C. It is a rare example of a Greek victor's statue and is believed to represent a guy who won a chariot race some 2,500 years ago. It was found in 1979 off the tiny island of Motya off the western coast of Sicily. His long tunic identifies him as a charioteer. This photo shows the reverse side of the charioteer.
