It is not known when he was appointed clockmaker to the Paris Observatoire, but it must have been before 1749, as the tax mark on the case of this clock indicates. It is known that Fieffé obtained some of his cases from several of the best Parisian gilded-bronze founder-chasers, including Jean-Joseph de Saint Germain (1719-1791), Jacques Caffieri (1678-1755), and Philippe II Caffieri (1714-1774). The Observatoire was founded in 1667 at the command of Louis XIV (1638-1715). The original building, a fine example of French classicism, was designed by Charles Perrault (1613-1688), architect of the colonnade on the east facade of the Louvre. The earliest of the observatorys astronomical instruments were installed on a terrace on the roof. The artists, designers and sculptors responsible for their designs closely followed the latest stylistic changes. Eighteenth-century French clockmakers took full advance of the luxury trades that flourished in Paris and beyond as they worked together to create movements to provide domestic clocks with splendid cases in various materials. The clock case and music box consist of scrolls and foliated branches, while a bag pipe decorates the front of the music box. In the mid-eighteenth century, France was the most important location for the creation of clocks and, particularly, their cases. French clockmakers were willing to eliminate pieces of a clocks mechanics that many clockmakers in other countries refused to remove, which allowed their machinery to take up less space. And although similar clocks were created in both England and France, the French versions are far rarer. In the eighteenth century, Cartel clocks and watches became more popular in France, as did clocks that hosted groups of statues, encouraging clockmakers to create the least intrusive mechanics possible. It would strike the nearest hour on demand when the attached strings were pulled, allowing the owner to hear the time in the dark. The cases with their trelliswork and rosette pattern in brass and blue-stained horn are each others opposites: the clock with a horn ground inlaid with brass and the barometer with a brass ground inlaid with horn. This marquetry is often referred to as Boulle work after the French royal cabinetmaker André Charles Boulle (1642-1732) who was a true master of this technique and to whom clock cases of this design have been attributed.. Close up of analogue stop watchMiniature longcase clock with calendar ca. 1720-25 Clockmaker: Daniel Quare Miniature longcase clocks are rarities: this one, which runs for a month on a single winding, is rarer still. The case barely accommodates the exceptionally heavy weights required by the long duration of the clock, and the door to the trunk had to be hollowed out to provide room for their free descent. The hour hand is a modern replacement. Daniel Quare (1649-1724), a Quaker probably born somewhere is Somerset, England, was admitted to the London Clockmakers Company in 1671. Described as a “great clockmaker” at the time of his admission, he was probably second only to Thomas Tompion among his contemporaries.
