These panels are the wings of a triptych, a three-paneled folding altarpiece, whose center (now in the MusÈes Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels) shows the Virgin and Child enthroned under an elaborate architectural canopy. The two elegant saints are identifiable by their attributes for Catherine, the wheel upon which she was tortured and the sword with which she was martyred; and for Barbara, the tower where her father locked her up to keep her safe from suitors. Saint Catherine also holds a ring, which the Christ Child in the Brussels panel reaches to grasp, thus indicating that their mystical union was the subject of the triptych. The tops of the two wings have been rounded off to mask their original function as moveable shutters to the left and right of the center panel. The backs and fronts of the wings were also separated; the backs of the wingGeorg II Landgraf von Hessen-Darmstadt (1605-1661) in the city; 1625 (1625-00-00-1625-00-00);Hesja (Germany), Hessen und Bei Rhein, Ernst Ludwig (Grossherzog - 1868-1937) - collections, foreign miniatures, men, portraits, men's portraits, rulersAnna Margarethe Stralenberger (1628 to 1691), the mother of the brothers Johann Hieronymus von Humbracht (1652 to 1713) and Johann Maximilian von Humbracht (1654 to 1714), painting by Conrad Faber von Kreuznach, Historic, digitally restored reproduction from a 19th century originalJohan Christiaan Elin, Portrait miniature of man, portrait miniature painting footage wood ivory paint watercolor ivory backing (size), Wooden gilded frame in upright rectangular format. Doña María de la Luz Padilla y Gómez de Cervantes, ca. 1735. Oil on canvas, Oval: 35 3/8 x 26 in. (89.9 x 66 cm). Throughout the Spanish empire and in Europe in general, the lesser nobility and wealthy merchant classes imitated the royal courts in their patronage of the arts, including the commissioning of full-length portraits. Doña María de la Luz (whose adult portrait is also on view in this exhibition) is portrayed here in her Mexico City town house with a toddlers rattle and a silver-mounted coral pacifier. Despite her young age, the sitter wears an embroidered silk dress in the height of French fashion complemented by a costly pearl necklace and matching earrings and bracelets. In Spanish America, the early eighteenth century saw the rise of the female portrait, which had been nearly nonexistent in seventeenth-century Mexico and Peru. The painting of John Van Cortlandt,Portrait of a Woman ca. 1480 Piero del Pollaiuolo (Piero di Jacopo Benci) Italian Some of the most distinguished female portraits produced in Florence in the third quarter of the fifteenth century seem to have originated in the workshop of Antonio and Piero del Pollaiuolo. The present portrait is ascribed to Piero del Pollaiuolo on the strength of its similarity to six panels of Virtues painted for the Mercanzia. The paint surface is much damaged, and the background, the dress, and the surrounding frame have been extensively restored.. The richly dressed female wearing an enigmatic smile is crowned with ivy and holds a bowl of cherries. The meaning is enigmatic: it may allude to marriage but also suggests a connection with sophisticated literary circles.. She wears a silk velvet cap, or scufia, with a jewel at the center and a necklace of black cord, whose pendant is tucked into her bodicefashionable attire of the period. It is one of a group of bowls celebrating women, including caterina bella, elisabetta bella, and aura bella, that seem to have been painted in Urbino or Castel Durante, and some of which were also lustered in Gubbio.. Dish (coppa amatoria) 460195Woman with a Book c 1827-1830 Philadelphia. Jonas Holman worked as a portrait painter, writer, doctor, and preacher, supporting himself through these vocations as he traveled among Baptist congregations. By 1827 he had made his way to Philadelphia where he painted seven known portraits, among them Woman with a Book and Man with a Pen. In these works Holman substituted a brilliant, tasseled curtain for a plain background. He showed his sitters in painted ìfancyî chairs, with broad, Greek Revival crest rails, similar to painted furniture made in Philadelphia or Baltimore. Like Ammi Phillips, Holman used props that pointed to the sittersí erudition; he also concentrated on the details of his sittersí costumes, showing women with rings and earrings and men with stickpins fastened to cravats.. Italy.Portrait of a Woman ca. 1445 Giovanni di Francesco del Cervelliera The attribution of this fascinating portrait has been much debated. It is unusual both for the plainness of the sitter and the box-like character of the setting. Was it intended to have funerary connotations, establishing a commemorative function for the portrait, or is the purpose of the emphatic perspective and the cast shadow to assert the illusionistic "presence" of the sitter The work thus poses fundamental questions about the uses of portraiture in fifteenth-century Florence. The picture dates about 1445.. Portrait of a Woman 437859The Young Saint John the Baptist. Artist: Piero di Cosimo (Piero di Lorenzo di Piero d'Antonio) (Italian, Florence 1462-1522 Florence).
