There are five types of card within the series. Type 1 cards are round. Type 2 cards are round with colored borders. Type 3 cards are die cut to the shape of a novelty item. Type 4 are also die cut with embossing. Type 5 depict novelties on a rectangular card. Finally, Type 6 are die cut in the shape of an egg.. Issued by Kinney Brothers Tobacco CompanyMiniature of Mabel Morrison 1866 Charles Lepec This portrait miniature, superbly executed in enamel, is a lovely example of a type very popular amongst middle- and moneyed-classes of Europe and the United States in the mid-nineteenth century. The sitters husband, English collector Alfred Morrison, was a champion of the artist, Lepec, and twenty years later commissioned a second enamel portrait of his wife (who seems hardly to have aged), also in The Mets collection (2010.33). Morrison acquired an astonishingly large exhibition piece, an Italianate enameled vase and stand, also made by Lepec for display at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle, also in The Mets collection (2004.452).. Portraits of Pan-American Privilege These womens ancestors were among the first European colonizers of the Americas. Some of those colonists crossed the Atlantic to serve the global ambitions of the various crowns of Europe, and others came as economic and religious refugees from Spain, England, and the Dutch Republic. By the eighteenth century, fabulous fortunes had been amassed throughout the region, reflected here in the European-inspired dress and jewelry worn by three privileged Americans. Miguel Cabrera, eighteenth-century Mexicos premier painter, portrayed Doña María de la Luz wearing imported silk brocade and five chiqueadores, or glued false beauty spots.
