Although the seconds-beating long pendulum (approximately 39 inches in length) became standard for longcase clocks in the late seventeenth century, a few clockmakers experimented with longer pendulums. It proved remarkably difficult, however, to make them reliable, and only the best English clockmakers were successful. This example, measuring about 60 inches in length, produces a slow tick and necessitated a seconds dial with only four divisions of each five-minute interval. Tompion's fine workmanship and ingenious designs contributed greatly to the fame of English clockmaking. For another Tompion clock with an unusual movement, also in the Museum's collection, see 1999.48.2, known as the Graves Tompion.. Longcase clock with calendar. British, London. ca. 1700. HorologyClock showing 12 o'clockTall-Case Clock 1765-80 Edward Duffield American This clock possesses a sophisticated weight-powered movement that runs for eight days and chimes on the hour. Its mahogany case, with intricate carving and appliqués, possesses a cockerel cartouche at the topa motif frequently seen on English and French clocks, but rarely on American examples. The cockerel may have been a reference to the Apostle Peter, patron saint of watchmakers, or to Christ’s proclamation at the Last Supper, "I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me" (Luke 22:34). Duffield was a leading Philadelphia clockmaker known for his friendship with Benjamin Franklin. He made clocks for Franklin’s family and served as executor of his estate.. Tall-Case Clock. Modeler: Mounts probably cast from models by Philippe II Caffieri (French, 1714-1774). Date: ca. 1768-70.Berthoud is considered one of the fathers of the marine chronometer. He became a master clockmaker in Paris and was appointed clockmaker to the French king and navy. One version of an equation clock that registers both solar and mean solar time was Berthoud's published invention. This clock is one of a series of regulators for which he made precision movements. It has a duration of one month and contains a bimetallic, or gridiron, pendulum. The thick brass and steel rods are mounted too closely together to be completely successful; nevertheless, these clocks were precise enough to be used by astronomers for timing celestial events. Ormolu with white marble, bronze, enamel, glass, brass and tin.. Makers: Boulton & Fothergill.. In mythology Narcissus was a youth whose beauty was dazzling. One day a maiden who loved him in vain prayed that he might feel what it was to love and meet no return of affection. One day when he drank from a fountain he saw his own image looking back at him; thinking it was a beautiful water-spirit living in the fountain, he fell in love. Of course the image was a reflection, and Narcissus, not being able to touch the reflection, could only look at it. He faded away at the waterside, his body was replaced by the narcissus flower that we know today.Board Empty blackboard with clock isolated with clipping path included Copyright: xZoonar.com/Baloncicix 7149005Gaspar Homar used up to forty different types of wood to make this oak chest table.Table clock by the Zentry company from the '50s, 2011 exhibition, Museum for Industrial Culture, Aeussere Sulzbacher Strasse 60-62, Nuremberg, Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany, EuropeHolmberg, Werner, Two tree trunk studies, Sitting woman with a forest in her background (two-sided work), 1859, watercolor on paper, painting, keywords: plant; wood; birchbark; landscape; forest; figure; woman, 23.5 cm x 29.5 cm,Antique Glass DoorknobThe Quirinal Palace.
