It was about 15-years ago, in the grey University city of Oxford, England. A teen-age boy member of the Oxford Dramatic Society, and with a walk-on, walk-off part in The Witch, cramped himself into the stage fireplace each night when his own exit was over, and watched every move of the main players. He was so intense about his watching that finally the wife of the play's producer said kindly, You do want to be an actor, don't you. Peter Gray shouted Yes - with emphasis-and that was the beginning of a career that's now brought him to Australia as the vital, cynical Garry Essendine in Present Laughter-a part for which he was chosen by the play's author, the magnificent (and natural and friendly and altogether delightful, says Peter) Noel Coward. First Night -- Mr. Fry the Author, and Dame Edith Evans, seem after the first ***** Dark is Light Enough" at the Aldwych Theater, *****."The Dark is Light Enough," by Christopher Fry. Aldwych.Words mean more than people or plot in this long promised "winter story," especially when they are spoken by an enchantress like Dame Edith Evans who could weave magic and music out of an engineering manual.The scene is a country house in the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Hungarian revolution of the late 1840's. Dame Edith, majestic in golden-grey ringlets, is a countess who helps her daughter's first husband to desert from the rebel army. He is no more than a rat in man's shape; a sour coward, worthless to friend and foe alike. But a compassion for humanity of any kind impels her to harbour him in her home even at the cost of handing over her daughter's present husband as hostage. April 30, 1954.
