Comedy ca. 1736 Pierre Charles Trémolières French Between 1736 and 1738 Trémolières painted large canvases of Comedy and Tragedy. Both belong now to the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Cholet. The former, for which this is probably a study, was exhibited at the Salon of 1738. A drawing for the head of Comedy is in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. The allegorical subjects were a novelty at the time.. Comedy 437844

A Woman with a Dog. Born in Amsterdam, Van der Mijn found his way via Düsseldorf and Antwerp to London, where he built a successful career with his finely painted portraits and scenes. The latter almost always feature a female figure in a landscape, and sometimes include a reference to a story from the Bible or Classical mythology. Whether this woman is a religious or a mythological figure is not known.

The Artists Niece, Marianne Lavergne, Known as ‘La Liseuse. This is the original of one of Liotards most famous compositions, of which he made several versions. He entitled it La Liseuse (the reader), and evidently intended it as a genre piece, although he also identified the figure as his niece wearing Lyonnaise costume. Liotard took it to Versailles in 1748 to advertise his skills as a pastellist to the French court.
