Sampler with apocalyptic verse. Culture: American. Dimensions: 18 x 19 1/2 in. (45.7 x 49.5 cm). Maker: Ann McFarlan (1817-1835). Date: 1827.This delightfully original sampler, with borders illustrating buildings and trees, reveals the visual influences and religious concerns of the part of New York State where McFarlan grew up in the 1820s. The sampler's composition and simple blue-and-white palette resemble the popular woven coverlets made by New York State weavers between 1820 and 1850. Typically, the coverlets were made of indigo-dyed dark blue wool and natural cotton and often had borders decoarted with repeating patterns of village houses. But the buildings pictured on this sampler have a meaning beyond a young girl's imitation of the designs found on a common bed covering. The Bible verse stitched in the lower left-hand corner speaks of the time after Judgment Day when redeemed souls will rise from the dead and "soar to the blest mansions." Embroidered sampler 1727 Mary Griffits Needlework samplers were made by young women in order to learn both the alphabet and fine embroidery techniques. Seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century samplers were long and narrow, with bands of the alphabet, numerals, and moral inscriptions as well as border patterns and decorative motifs. Cloth with Border of Crowned Double-Headed Eagles with Various Emblems, Birds, and Other Animals, 19th century. Italy, 19th century. Needle lace, burato (twined ground and darned in two directions), bobbin lace insert and edging, and crochet insert; bleached linen (est.); overall: 62.4 x 132.3 cm (24 9/16 x 52 1/16 in.). A range of techniques were used to create textural variation in this lace cloth: buratto, bobbin, and crochet. Figural motifs appear within the inserted buratto bands. Different birds, with crosses visible on their chests, crowned double-headed eagles, and feline figures facing a vessel may allude to the heraldic symbols of a particular family.

Eliza Dymond Hull worked this sampler when she was nine years old. Elizas given name was Elizabeth and she was a fifth generation Quaker living in Uxbridge. Date: 1825.This small sampler worked with the alphabet in upper and lower case, as well as number 1 through 9, represents the tenth lesson in the "Manual of the System of Teaching Needlework in the Elementary Schools of The British and Foreign School Society," published in 1821. This educational society was founded by Quaker Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838) out of concern for the lack of educational opportunities available to poorer children, particularly those whose families not members of the Church of England. Small samplers such as this are preserved in these manuals, and were also made into objects such as pincushions that were sold to raise funds for the school. A complete example of this manual, dating from 1821, is also preserved in the Museum's collection (accession number 43.63). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
