Perpetual calendar ('always-duiling Almanach'). Calendar with the names of the six months and the constellations among each other on the left and right-hand side. In between is a globe on half a column. At the top of a slidable strip with twice the days of the week. Among the months a table with the sunrises is grouped in the shortening and lags of the days with a wind rose in between.

Leaf from a Beatus Manuscript: Table of the Antichrist ca. 1180 Spanish Illustrated Beatus manuscripts bring to life an extraordinary vision of the end of the world, as recorded by Saint John in the Apocalypse (Book of Revelation) and filtered through the lens of Beatus of Liébana, an eighth-century Asturian monk. These manuscripts are unique to medieval Spain and a testament to the pervasive artistry and intellectual milieu of monastic culture there. The leaf shown here comes from a manuscript disassembled in the 1870s.This table was created in an attempt to calculate the numerical "code" of the Antichrist, who was a particularly troubling figure to Christians of the Middle Ages. Saint John asserted in Apocalypse 13.18 that the "number of the beastis 666," the number specifically linked to the devil at the time the Apocalypse was written. Tabula (Square) with Vine Scrolls Containing Aquatic Birds 5th-7th century Tunics and domestic furnishings were often decorated with orbiculi and tabulae (round and square medallions), frequently arranged in pairs. Birds and vine scrolls were popular motifs of abundance, the use of which continued from the classical world into later Byzantine and Islamic art. On this tabula the vine scroll has been reduced to interconnected circular motifs filled with aquatic birds and flowers, possibly lotus blossoms, the flower of the Nile.. Date: 1799.The Museum is fortunate to have this fine example of an English Quaker school sampler; American Quaker samplers are more numerous. Eliza Dymond Hull worked this sampler when she was nine years old. Eliza's given name was Elizabeth and she was a fifth generation Quaker living in Uxbridge. Seven Leaves from a Manuscript of the Gandavyuha-sutra (Scripture of the Supreme Array), 1000s-1100s. Nepal. Gum tempera and ink on palm leaves; overall: 4.2 x 52.4 cm (1 5/8 x 20 5/8 in.). These pages come from a long horizontal book of 355 palm leaves, now dispersed among many collections. Featuring the pilgrim Sudhana on his quest to reach enlightenment, the text was especially influential in the spread of Buddhism to East Asia. These leaves are from the sole surviving illustrated manuscript of this text in its original language of Sanskrit.

Sampler made at a charity school 19th century British The earliest British charity schools for poor and orphaned children were founded around the country by local gentry, to support and educate children whose families lived in the vicinity. In the eighteenth century, the number of institutions increased significantly. Arguably the most famous of these is the Foundling Hospital in London established by Thomas Coram in 1741; the charity still exists today as the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children. Most of these small samplers were monochrome; made to be included in a book of stitching exercises. This more colorful example might have been made into a pincushion or other decorative item to be sold as a fund raiser for the school.. Sampler made at a charity school 228656
