Use was mainly made of unfree workers on the Galien. Many of the rowers were Islamic Galace slaves, which can be recognized as such by their ankle cuffs and the typical haircut (head except for a tuft) that they were obliged to have. With this they could be distinguished from, for example, political prisoners who had been convicted of the galleys. The Galeiroeiers who helped clear the plague victims in Marseille was promised freedom in return, but the majority of them succumbed to the disease.
