Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Scientist Dave Fratantoni works on the EcoMapper AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) onboard the Institute's research vessel Knorr, Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, in Woods Hole, Mass.  The EcoMappers will be deployed in the Atlantic Ocean as part of the Salinity Processes in the Upper Ocean Regional Study (SPURS) which is set to sail on Sept. 6.  The NASA-sponsored expedition will sail to the North Atlantic's saltiest spot to get a detailed, 3-D picture of how salt content fluctuates in the ocean's upper layers and how these variations are related to shifts in rainfall patterns around the planet.

Kate Cutshall, outdoor commercial recreation program manager, Marine Corps Community Services speaks about the new Lunga Recreation Facility on Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, July 18, 2022. Lunga will be open for camping, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. The facility closed in 2012 due to the discovery of unexploded ordnance. Cleanup efforts are currently being made by Marine Corps Community Services Quantico and Navy Facilities Command Washington to restore Lunga as a safe and fun place for Marines and their families. The new Lunga Recreation Facility is expected to open in the near future.

Kennedys Environmental Management Branch is working to plant a minimum of 28,000 shoots of seagrass divided into 18 sites across three areas at the Florida spaceport as part of a pilot project for seagrass restoration efforts. The project will look at the feasibility of replanting seagrass in Kennedy waters and, if successful, could lead to the spaceport becoming a donor site where shoots of grass can be broken off and relocated to other areas within Kennedy or along the Indian River Lagoon to promote growth.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Patti Bell (left) and Dr. Violette Wahba Salib (center) are greeted by KSC Deputy Director Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr. after their return from Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Bell and Salib are with Environmental and Occupational Health at KSC. They were part of a volunteer team helping rescue and recovery efforts at Stennis, which was damaged during Hurricane Katrina. Many employees of Stennis and Michoud Assembly Facility, near New Orleans, were rendered homeless by the hurricane. NASA centers have been generous with relief supplies and personnel. Stennis is now in limited operations mode. Daily convoys have been moving between Stennis and Michoud, transporting personnel and supplies as Michoud prepares to resume limited operations.
