The Batavians Defeating the Romans on the Rhine. In 1613, the Dutch parliament (States General) commissioned Otto van Veen to paint twelve paintings depicting the revolt of the Batavians against the Romans in AD 69 and 70. These were displayed in Binnenhof, the central government building in The Hague. In the early years of the Dutch Republic, many compared their own revolt against Spain to the Batavian uprising.

The Capture of Carthage 1725-29 Giovanni Battista Tiepolo Italian This painting is from a series of ten magnificent canvases painted to decorate the main room of Ca Dolfin, a palace in Venice. The subject has been variously identified. It probably shows the capture of Carthage by Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus (known as Scipio Africanus the Younger) in 146 B.C., a momentous event that categorically ended the power of Carthage. The carnage was unspeakable and the city burned for seventeen days. The depiction of this event probably carried an allusion to the recent campaigns of the Venetians against the Turks in the Mediterranean, and in particular to the participation of Daniele Dolfin. Dramatically foreshortened figures underscore Tiepolos sense of theater.. The Capture of Carthage 437795

Flemish baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens painted his 'Rape of the Sabines' in oil 1635-1637. It now hangs in the National Gallery In London, England. The theme is the legendary tale in early Rome, when Romulus and his men who founded Rome needed wives and invited the neighboring Sabines to a feast. At a given signal during the festivities, the Romans grabbed Sabine women to take as their wives. The Romans then fought the Sabines to win the women back, but the women stood between the two sides and asked them to stop. The two sides agreed and merged into one nation.

Abu 'abd-Allah Muhammad XII (c. 1460- c. 1533), known as Boabdil, was the 22nd and last Nasrid ruler of Granada. In 1491, Muhammad XII was summoned by Ferdinand and Isabella to surrender the city of Granada, and on his refusal it was besieged by the Castilians. Eventually, on 2 January, 1492, Granada was surrendered. In most sumptuous attire the royal procession moved from Santa Fe to a place a little more than a mile from Granada, where Ferdinand took up his position by the banks of the Genil to receive the keys to the city. Arab rule in Spain was over.
