New Kingdom, Amarna Period Nina de Garis Davies The original of this facsimile is part of the preserved lower part of a wall scene (now in the Ashmolean Museum) excavated in what Petrie called the 'King's House' after the subject matter of the paintings. This finely decorated building has recently been suggested to be a vizier's formal office. The building is located in the Central City at Amarna, linked to the ceremonial Great Palace by a bridge constructed across the Royal Road. This scene derives from an informal grouping of the royal family that extended over a wall in one room of the building; apparently there was a mirroring scene on the opposite wall, and other royal scenes on the remaining walls. Only the lower part of the mural composition is preserved, but that part gives evidence that the king was seated on a chair with his feet on a cushion, and that the queen crouched among cushions across from him. Siyah Kalem or 'Black Pen' is the name given to the 15th century school of painting attributed to Mehmed Siyah Kalem. Nothing is known of his life, but his work indicates that he was of Central Asian Turkic origin, and thoroughly familiar with camp and military life. The paintings appear in the 'Conqueror's Albums', so named because two portraits of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror are present in one of them. The albums are made up of miniatures taken from manuscripts of the 14th, 15th, and early 16th centuries, and one series of paintings is inscribed 'work of Master Muhammad Siyah Kalem'. Something of the style and techniques of Chinese paintings is apparent in these, and an acquaintance with Buddhist art, particularly in the depictions of grotesque demonic figures.

Swift Dog Strikes an Enemy ca. 1880 Swift Dog In the 1860s, Plains men began to render their personal histories and those of their people on sheets of paper and in ledger books that were captured from the military or obtained in trade. They executed these works in combinations of graphite, colored pencil, ink, crayon, and watercolor. Initially these depictions focused on moments of valor and victories in war, with occasional personal visions. Images of daily lifehunting, courtship, animals, dances, ceremonial events, and camp scenesfollowed. These works extended the earlier tradition of autobiographical warrior art incised on rock faces and painted on robes, shirts, and tipis. They became a way to document tribal life and history, affirming fundamental cultural values.Although the warrior-artist Swift Dog captures a dramatic moment of action in this ledger drawing, the delicate composition of flowing line and pale transparent color adds a detached elegance. The national Persian epic, the 'Shahnameh', meaning 'The King's Chronicles', is a poetic opus written around 1000 CE by Ferdowsi. Regarded as the national folktale of Greater Persia, the Shahnameh consists of some 60,000 verses and tells the mythical and historical past of (Greater) Iran from the creation of the world up until the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century.

Hopgood Excerpted from a scene that showed Qenamun fishing in the papyrus marshes, this fragment conveys a sense of life and movement -- as the marshes lay at the edges of the Egyptians' ordered world, they were associated with the undifferentiated and thus lively and chaotic realm which surrounded and threatened the cosmos, but from which all life ultimately sprang. The umbels of the papyrus plants are regimented, the open blossoms arranged carefully in three rows with a row of unopened buds below, yet the artist has used different sizes for the blooms, tilted them ever so slightly this way and that, and overlapped the flowering heads and their stalks in a seemingly random fashion. The ducks that fly at the top are almost identical in form and position, but again minor variations imbue the scene with life.
