Mount Washington 1869 New Hampshire. The White Mountains of New Hampshire were celebrated by artists, travel writers, and naturalists for their majestic wilderness. In the mid-19th century, Hudson River School painters reveled in the untamed scenery, but by the time Winslow Homer arrived on assignment from Harperís Weekly in 1868, the region was dominated by tourists and the comforts they demanded grand hotels, railroads, and well-groomed trails for walking and riding. Homer depicted the eastern landscape as a stage for human activity, rather than as a sublime paradise fraught with Christian and nationalistic associations, which was a new approach to landscape painting in the years after the Civil War.. Oil on canvas . Winslow Homer

6145-59125167
A Horse Rider Talking to a Man at an Inn. Hendrick Avercamp (Dutch, 1585 - 1634) about 1630 Avercamp depicted a summer's evening along the banks of a river. In the foreground, a rider with his horse faces a man. Just behind them stands a humble inn, with its shutters open to let in fresh air. Using a low horizon line, Avercamp created a vibrant and multi-hued sky, contrasting blues with streaks of red and yellow. He peppered the river with ducks and boats, including a crowded cable ferry crossing to the opposite shore. A charming view of everyday life, the drawing demonstrates Avercamp's keen observations of people along the river and the water's edge. His characteristic bold outlines describe the humble figures and setting with a practiced and careful simplicity that is further enhanced by the application of bright colors to enliven the atmosphere. The layering of watercolor, and the prominent placement of the artist's monogram, indicates that this sheet was a complete and independent

Prairie on Fire Charles Deas (American, 1818-1867). Prairie on Fire, 1847. Oil on canvas, 28 3/4 x 35 15/16 in. (73 x 91.3 cm). Prairie Fire takes the classic damsel-in-distress story line and transports it to the American West. Panicked horses and frantic riders race through a prairie as a fire rages in the background. In choosing this setting, Charles Deas drew on popular imagery in nineteenth-century visual art and literature, including James Fenimore Coopers novel The Prairie. American Art 1847

Race Horses ca. 1885-88 Edgar Degas French Degas undertook racing scenes throughout his career, characteristically manipulating his horses and jockeys from one picture to the next. All the figures here appear in earlier works, and some of the poses have pedigrees even more distinguished than the horses: the prancing mount and rider at the center derive from Benozzo Gozzoli's Journey of the Magi in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, Florence, which Degas had copied in 1859. This picture is nevertheless unusual for its mediumpastel on a plain, unvarnished panel. With skillful economy of means, Degas allowed the wood to color the sky and distant landscape, and to provide a warm undertone for the turf in the foreground.. Race Horses 437994

Horsewoman 1820 or later Théodore Gericault Gericault studied horses extensively throughout his life, and his stay in England in 1820-21 inspired a group of works representing elegant aspects of horsemanship and sport. The identity of this fashionably attired woman, who rides sidesaddle, is subject to speculation. Horse and rider are depicted in frieze-like profile, with the calm control she exerts over her mount standing in stark contrast to the portentous sky that distracts neither of them. Gericault here reconceives the traditional French image of a horsewoman, or Amazone, a term derived from ancient texts describing a fabled civilization of warrior women celebrated for their courage in battle.. Bust of Abraham Lincoln Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, born Ireland, 1848-1907). Bust of Abraham Lincoln, 1922. Bronze, 28 x 17 x 14 in. (71.1 x 43.2 x 35.6 cm). This portrait bust of President Abraham Lincoln was derived from the full-length standing portrait completed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1887 for Chicagos Lincoln Park. Saint-Gaudens based Lincolns likeness on plaster life casts of the presidents head. The sculptor was inspired by Lincolns landmark 1860 speech at Cooper Union in New York, in which the future president declared that the founders would have opposed the expansion of slavery into new American territories. In this speech Lincoln also made famous the phrase “Let us have faith that right makes might.” American Art 1922

The Races at Longchamp 1866 France. With a characteristic focus on the pleasures of modern life, douard Manet depicted this scene of the racetrack in the Bois de Boulogne, on the western outskirts of Paris. The popularity of Longchamp, where races were run for the first time in 1857, signaled a general revival in French horse racing. This painting records the last moments of a race, as the horses rush past the finish line, indicated by the pole with a circular top. Unlike traditional sporting artists, who always showed races from the side, Manet dared to compose the scene so that the throng of horses and jockeys thunders straight toward the viewer.. Oil on canvas . Édouard Manet
