This illustration shows Tryggvi escaping from land of Wick. Tryggvi "the Pretender" (Old Norse Tryggvi Ólafsson) was a Viking chieftain who lived in the early eleventh century. He came from "west across the sea" (probably from the Norse settlements in England and Ireland). Usually pronounced 'week', the word wick comes from the Old Norse vík meaning an inlet or small, and mostly open, bay. Often U-shaped and with one or more beach, wicks would have been popular landing places for the incoming Norse settlers. This illustration by Gordon Browne dates to 1913.

The Equestrienne (L'Amazone) Édouard Manet (French, 1832-1883). The Equestrienne (L'Amazone), ca. 1875-1876. Watercolor and graphite on tan wove paper, 8 3/16 x 10 5/8 in. (20.8 x 27 cm). In the mid-nineteenth century, the term amazone mockingly referred to fashionable Parisian women who preferred to ride on horseback instead of inside a carriage, and wore elegant costumes while doing so. Édouard Manet, a committed observer of Parisian life, was particularly attuned to the fashions of the era, often taking as his subject the leisure activities of modern urban women. In this watercolor, he used loose, rapid brushstrokes to form the riders light brown jacket, black skirt and bow tie, and jaunty boaterlike hat. This painting may depict a single dancer seen from four different viewpoints. The young woman is placed in an undefined setting, surrounded by mere wisps of color, applied so spontaneously that the paint ran and dripped. Degas even added the circles in the foreground with his thumb. Such audacity, while acceptable in a small sketch, must have shocked the artist's contemporaries when presented on a six-foot canvas. Equally radical is the idea of combining multiple views of a single figure. Degas's unusual presentation may have been inspired by the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904)
