Running out of the Course January 1, 1799 Thomas Rowlandson The print comes from a group by Rowlandson devoted to moments in horse racing--interestingly none shows a finish. When first published around 1789, the titles were "The Mount," "The Start," "The Betting Post," and "The Course." The present example comes from an expanded reissue of 1798-99 with titles altered to "Mounting" (59.533.1697), "Racing" (59.533.1694), "Betting" (59.533.1695), with "Between Heats" (59.533.514, 59.533.1700), and "Weighing" (59.533.1696) and "Running out of the Course" (59.533.1698) added. One of the latter, this shows a jockey struggling to control his mount which threatens spectators--fences rarely lined courses at this period, even near the finish.. Running out of the Course. Racing Series (1789; reissued with additions 1798-99). Thomas Rowlandson (British, London 1757-1827 London). January 1, 1799. Hand-colored etching and aquatint. S. W. Fores (London). Prints

Sir John Floyd on Horseback 1800-14 Richard Westall British Westall did not visit India, but relied on visual information supplied by others to portray a British cavalry officer in the mountains of Mysore. With accurate details of uniform and visage, a dynamic pose, and a dramatic setting, he adapted to a smaller scale a Romantic portrait type recently devised by the artists friend Thomas Lawrence. Floyd had distinguished himself fighting the Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan in 1790-92 and 1799. This portrait was likely commissioned soon after the sitter returned to England in 1800, when Westalls reputation was at its height. An 1814 exhibition prompted a critic to note, "The honor which Great Britain has derived from the discovery of the art of painting in transparent water colours.. is in great degree to be ascribed to Mr. Westall.".
