Monument, Ruin near Rome Richard Cooper II British, Scottish 1774-75 Born in Edinburgh, Cooper II trained as an engraver under his father, then studied in Paris with Jacques Philippe le Bas (1707-1783). He made these drawings during a visit to Italy in 1771-76 and, until recently, they were preserved in an album that descended in the family. Interestingly, each composition relates closely to a drawing in a sketchbook that Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797) used in Rome in 1774-75 (57.102.1(1-44)). These visual links suggest that the two artists sketched together and took it in turns to use an optical instrument. While the outlines of their related compositions are close was then developed in markedly different ways. Landscape with Figures Trimming Trees, an Allegory of the Month of March; Verso: Mountainous Landscape with Two Men Crossing a Bridge 16th century () Anonymous This rather peculiar double-sided drawing contains two sketches that are widely divergent in both style and subject matter. The recto shows a cursory sketch of a landscape with figures pruning trees. In the upper center appears the zodiacal sign of the Ram, accompanied by the inscription ‘Martius’, indicating that the image is meant to symbolize the month March, with the typical labors of that time of year. The verso, on the other hand, shows a wide mountainous panorama with at its center two figures crossing a wooden bridge. Rocks and trees flank the view on a valley with city walls in the distance. The sheet was previously attributed to the Netherlandish landscapist Lodewijk Toeput. Stylistically, however, the drawings are not compatible with the artist’s draftsmanship; the recto shows a boldness in the application of washes
