Italian Sketchbook Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823-1880). Italian Sketchbook, 1867-1868. Graphite on tan, medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 5 x 9 x 7/16 in. (12.7 x 22.9 x 1.1 cm). This sketchbook served as a travel diary for the Hudson River School landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford during his journeys in France, Switzerland, and Italy. In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. The small framed motifs that appear on this and other pages of the sketchbook show his initial experiments with composition. American Art 1867-1868

Miss Loïe Fuller 1893 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec French The American Loïe Fuller was famous in turn-of-the-century Paris for her dazzling performances which combined dance, colored electric lights, and music. In this print, inspired by her appearance at the Folies Bergère, Lautrec captures the decorative effect of her billowing silk gown, which she manipulated with large poles held in her hands. Scenic Sites in the Qianlong Emperors Southern Inspection Tour 19th century China These four tapestry hangings (13.220.134-.137) may be from a larger group depicting the scenic sites that the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736-95) visited during his historic tours south of the capital. The inscriptions identify these four places as Forest of Springs (Quanlin), Pool of the Ancient School (Panchi), Guangyue Tower (Guangyuelou), and Wuwei Monastery (Wuweiguan), all now in Shandong Province. Aside from Guangyue Tower, the buildings at the other three sites have been destroyed, though the first two are known to have housed auxiliary palaces. The images on these panels are comparable to woodblock illustrations in Nanxun Shengdian, a book published in 1770 to memorize the emperors tours..
