This illustration dates to the early 1920s. The caption reads: The Thin Red Line of Balaklava. This stirring picture shows the gallant siege of the Ninety-third Highlanders at the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War. This engagement was fought October 25, 1854, and was the scene of the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, which Tennyson has immortalized in his poem of that name.

The Battle of Nieuwpoort between a Dutch army under Maurice of Nassau and Francis Vere and a Spanish army under Albert of Austria took place on 2 July 1600 near the present-day Belgian city of Niewpoort.

Bombs and Bayonets to the Fore: a daybreak charge on the British front. The bombers, supported by bayonets, used bombs of the rocket shape on this occasion carried in panniers, or canvas bags. The piece of webbing attached caused the bombs to land head downwards and ensured explosion. The larger explosions on the left were caused by ""hair-brush"" bombs, so called from their shape.
