It's A Race Against Time - They Have To Sow By Broadcasting -- Yes, they are having to sow by broadcasting today. It has nothing to do with the Light Programme, either: long before radio got itself invested and borrowed the word, "broadcasting" was the correct term for sowing by hand, as these skilled sons of the soil are going.Today the farmer is six weeks behind with his wowing. Down on Sir Peter Greenwell's estate at Catherham, the ground, still heavy. Would be ready for mechanical sowing in a few days - but they can't wait those few days. European Volunteer Workers -- Under the Government scheme for the recruitment of men and women for the under-manned industries, a large number of people from the Displaced persons Camp in the British one in Germany have volunteered. Known as European Volunteer workers, they receive the same pay and general conditions as would British workers, of whom there are insufficient to fill these special jobs. Their contract is for one year after which the general position of each industry will be reviewed, with a possible offer to the workers of permanent settlement in this country. September 13, 1951.
