Testing The Chain. How to Plant a Mooring Buoy, in a series of difficult lessons by Coast Guard Buoy Tender, LAUREL. Give a Coast Guardsman enough chain, and he will test it. As here shown. A weak link can be discovered by the sound given off under impact of the hammer. If a weak link is found, it is cut out with a hack saw and replaced by a so-called "patent link," which comes apart for insertion in the chain and which snaps together securely afterwards. Safety first, in sea-going matters is Coast Guard maxim, and here it is applied to the job of planting a mooring buoy. Note: These scenes of Coast Guard action are laid in a Greenland Fjord.
