Madame Réjane Aubrey Vincent Beardsley British Portrait of Madame Gabrielle Réjane French 1894 Beardsley's drawing centers on Gabrielle Réjane, a successful French acress whose London debut as Catherine in "Madame Sans Gêne" took place at the Gaiety Theatre on June 24, 1894. The artist imagines her resting on a chaise-longue and uses a filmy sweep of skirt to define the form, with deep black japoniste upholstery supporting the actress's back and feet. A strong visual contrast is established between the expanse of white paper at left, containing a few minimalist lines that describe furniture, and a dark border below which is filled is flowers but is reminiscent of the edge of a stage. The Seated Clowness (Mademoiselle Cha-u-ka-o) (from the series Elles) 1896 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec French The success of Toulouse-Lautrec's posters advertising Parisian cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge led him to produce deluxe editions of prints of Montmartre's performers, such as this one of the clown and dancer Cha-u-Kao. These lithographs were intended to appeal to fans and print collectors alike. Unlike Lautrec's other images that feature Cha-u-Kao performing, this one captures her off stage in a moment of quiet repose. Beauty at the Mimeguri Shrine 1804-1818 Japan. This fashionable woman is enjoying a cool evening by the Mimeguri Shrine, located on an embankment of the Sumida River, which flows through central Tokyo. Her clothing advertises her sophistication a chic lightweight black kimono that reveals the colors of her robes underneath, with a complementary obi (sash). Toyohiro was a second-generation artist of the Utagawa School, the most prominent painters of ukiyo-e, or ìfloating worldî pictures. The phrase ìfloating worldî describes a way of life in premodern Japanese cities (17thñ19th centuries) that celebrated enjoyment in fleeting pleasures such as art, beauty, and fashion..
