Insulin secretion in a person with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes (or non-insulin-dependent) is a form of diabetes mellitus that mainly affects adults over 40 years of age. Due to a diet too rich in fat, glucose metabolism is very disrupted. Muscle cells respond less well to the action of insulin, which is responsible for signaling them to let glucose in to lower blood sugar (blood sugar level). Ingesting a sugary food causes an increase in blood sugar (glucose in blue). This causes the pancreas to secrete insulin, which is sent to the various organs of the body to stimulate the use of glucose, mainly to the muscles and liver. Thus, the glucose will either be transformed into glycogen to be stored in the liver and muscles, or used by other organs. This will then lower the blood glucose level. In type 2 diabetic patients, who are often overweight, the secretion of insulin by the pancreas is insufficient to cover needs, so the blood glucose level remains high despite the production of

Representation of the location of HIV-infected immune cells. Viral infection is very dynamic because immune cells circulate throughout the body and are disseminated in all tissues. Lymphoid tissues, lymph nodes and the digestive tract have a high level of infection and replication. Infected TCD4+ lymphocytes and viral particles are also present in the lungs, spleen, thymus and brain. Viral infection is easily detected in the genital compartments, in the state of reservoir cells but also in the state of infectious viral particles at the origin of sexual contamination.

Illustration of where cholesterol comes from and how it is eliminated. The body's cholesterol is synthesized in the liver (70%), the diet provides the rest. LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) is used for cellular consumption. When there is too much LDL in the body, it is captured by HDL (good cholesterol) to be redirected to the liver and eliminated. It is said that LDL is a bad cholesterol because in too large quantities in the body, it sticks to the walls of the arteries to form an atheroma plaque, while HDL protects the arteries and tissues.

Illustration of the hormonal changes during menopause, and in particular the production of oestrogen. After 50, oestrogen levels are maintained for a short while, thanks to the production of male hormones by the adrenal glands and ovaries. Ovaries also produce oestradiol (E2). These hormones are changed into oestrogen (oestrone, E1) by the fat cells.
