Bather Drying Herself ca. 1892 Edgar Degas French Edgar Degas greatly admired the female figure. Whereas his depictions of ballerinas focus on the elegant, performative body, his studies of women bathing show an equal appreciation for the uninhibited gestures of this private activity. In intimate, close-up portrayals, Degas depicted his models seated, crouched, or standing, often in contorted poses as they lifted arms and legs to wash or dry themselves. Chalk and pastels helped him capture the play of light and movement in these domestic choreographies. In this relatively abstract portrayal, he used white chalk to offset the color of the paper and to suggest the curvature of the womans back and arms.. Bather Drying Herself 334223

Woman Having Her Hair Combed. Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834-1917 Paris). Dimensions: 29 1/8 x 23 7/8 in. (74 x 60.6 cm). Date: ca. 1886-88.No doubt Degas intended to include this work in the 1886 Impressionist exhibition among the nudes he described in the catalogue as "women bathing, washing themselves, combing their hair or having it combed," since it is his only pastel of the mid-1880s of a woman having her hair combed. Executed in large format and meticulously finished, this nude--reminiscent of Rembrandt's famous <i>Bathsheba at Her Bath</i> in the Louvre--may not have been completed in time for the exhibition, or else it may have been excluded deliberately for reasons unknown. But It is the Heart That Beats Too Quickly, plate twelve from Love 1898-1899 France. These 12 prints come from Love, a series of color lithographs that form a disjointed narrative about a woman who experiences love, although it is unclear if she is falling in love with a man, nature, or her faith. Each soft and dreamlike image is paired with a caption of fragmented poetry that serves as its title, but these phrases do not directly describe their corresponding images. Maurice Denis, who was also a writer, crafted these puzzling yet evocative captions to add layers of meaning through the interplay of text and image..
