Many of the paintings, such as this one, that Charles Courtney Curran completed during his summers at the Cragsmoor art colony near Ellenville, New York, reflect the genteel, idyllic nature of the community, and show figures set within the picturesque landscape of the area. Here, three idealized young women are silhouetted against a sunlit sky as they perch on a boulder. Currans treatment of bright summer skies, which often took up the greatest portion of his compositions, became a hallmark of his paintings from Cragsmoor. American Art 1909

In the Studio 1888 Alfred Stevens Belgian The beautiful sitters, art along the walls, open portfolio, and prominent mirror symbolize the artistic practice of Stevens, who was celebrated for his portrayals of chic and charming women. On the easel is his painting of the biblical temptress Salomé (Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels). The female protagonists of In the Studio pose a counterpoint to the male-dominated French art world, which presented many barriers to women artists, and particularly those undertaking ambitious figural subjects. Stevens encouraged the careers of a number of women pupils and colleagues, most notably the sculptor and actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923).Salomé was inspired by Henri Regnaults painting of the same subject (now in gallery 804).. This canvas is a repetition of the left-hand portion of one of his most famous London pictures, Bad News (National Museum of Wales, Cardiff), which shows a captain and his girlfriend absorbing the news of his imminent departure while a companion prepares tea, with the Pool of London in the background. Here, the view is of the dense cityscape beyond that stretch of the river. Tissot's friend Degas owned a pencil study for this work. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Spring Morning ca. 1875 James Tissot French The light on this spring day is so bright that the woman shields her eyes from the glare. She stands with her back to the sun, so that her face and dress are largely in shadow. This contre-jour effect, with the figure lit from behind, was popular with artists in the Impressionist circle in the 1870s and 1880s. Tissot skillfully elaborated on the motif by depicting the sunlight shining through the models sleeve and parasol. The strong silhouette of the figure and the prominent plants may have been inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, which Tissot collected, as did his friends Monet and Degas.. Spring Morning 440729

The Daughters of Catulle Mendès, Huguette (1871-1964), Claudine (1876-1937), and Helyonne (1879-1955). Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 63 3/4 x 51 1/8 in. (161.9 x 129.9 cm). Date: 1888.Hoping to recapture the success he had achieved with Madame Georges Charpentier and Her Children (07.122) at the Salon of 1879, Renoir sought to paint the daughters of his friend Catulle Mendès. In addition to the girls' manifest charm, he undoubtedly counted on the notoriety of their bohemian parents to gain attention: their father was a Symbolist poet and publisher, and their mother was the virtuoso pianist Augusta Holmès. Renoir completed the commission in a matter of weeks and immediately exhibited the large canvas in May 1888, but the response to his new manner of painting, with its intense hues and schematized faces, was unenthusiastic. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: AUGUSTE RENOIR.
