Disgusted with the materialism of European society, Gauguin abandoned his family and career as a stockbroker and departed for Tahiti in 1891. This canvas is among the first paintings he completed on the island. Its rich colors and stylized figures were intended to be both symbolic and mysterious, evoking private thoughts and emotions. I obtain symphonies,” he wrote, harmonies that represent nothing real in the absolute sense of the word.”

Date: 1872-73.Millet wrote to his patron Frédéric Hartmann on February 18, 1873 that he had nearly completed this picture for the dealer Durand-Ruel: "It is a hillock, with a single tree almost bare of leaves, and which I have tried to place rather far back in the picture. The figures are a woman seen from behind and a few turkeys. I have also tried to indicate the village in the background on a lower plane." The setting is near Barbizon, where Millet lived from 1849 until his death. The tower of the neighboring hamlet of Chailly-en-Bière is visible in the distance. Dolce Far Niente John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). Dolce Far Niente, ca. 1907. Oil on canvas, 16 1/4 x 28 1/4 in. (41.3 x 71.7 cm). John Singer Sargent spent part of several summers painting open-air subjects in Italys Val dAosta. The resulting works reveal his pleasure in the description of vividly brilliant light. To suggest an alluring sensuality, Sargent often dressed his models in costumes that he had purchased in the Middle East. Here, several figures almost seem to merge with the water, enhancing the intimacy of the gathering.
