Ballad Singer at a Shrine of the Virgin 1720-1725 Italy. A Genoese artist who worked mostly in Milan, Alessandro Magnasco epitomizes the transition between 17th- and 18th-century art in northern Italy. Rarely did his highly individual style find such expression as in this drawing, in which reddish-brown chalk wash heightened with white approximates the agitated strokes of the heavily applied impasto in his oil paintings.. Brush and brown gouache and brush and brown wash, with traces of brown chalk, heightened with white chalk, over black chalk, on blue laid paper (discolored to pale brownish-gray) . The Madonna and Child with a Female Martyr Saint, a Bishop Saint, and a Female Donor. Artist: Veronese School, workshop of Stefano da Verona (Stefano di Giovanni d'Arbosio di Francia) (Italian, Paris or Pavia ca. 1374/75-after 1438 Verona). Dimensions: 9 7/16 x 7 1/2 in. (23.9 x 19.1 cm). Date: first half 15th century.Although this drawing echoes the vocabulary of Stefano da Verona, it is more likely attributable to one of his followers, due to its schematic quality and the uncertain spatial relation among the figures. The sheet may represent a copy of a lost painting by Stefano da Verona or perhaps a compositional concept produced by a pupil. The female donor in the foreground kneels in adoration before the Virgin and Child, as she is presented by the accompanying female saint holding a martyr's palm. At the right, a bishop saint bears a crosier and miter. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Lady About to Smoke a Hookah. Culture: India (Punjab Hills, Kangra). Dimensions: 7 x 5 in. (17.8 x 12.7 cm). Date: ca.1790.Painting from the Punjab Hills in the second half of the eighteenth century was deeply indebted to earlier Mughal painting styles of that century. Pahari artists became skilled in rendering the illusionistic space, idealized proportions of figures and facial types, and more naturalistic depiction of nature that characterized the late Mughal style. Although the Pahari (hill states) style was more naturalistic than that of contemporaneous Rajasthani painting, each tradition used a stock repertoire of lines to create images. In this example, each feature of the young heroine's anatomy, for example, is a simple curve, from the gentle slope of her inner forearm to the rounds of her breasts or the gentle backward s of her calf. This underdrawing shows something of the artist's thought process as he composed the picture. He has shifted the pavilion to the right, lowered
