Odilon Redon, whose enigmatic, haunting works exemplify the dreamlike themes and emotional emphasis of Symbolism, produced almost two hundred lithographs. Many of them capture the moody, dark tonalities of his charcoal drawings, which he called noirs. Here, a strange figure in profile, with a curiously enlarged eara being possibly inspired by Francisco Goya, whom Redon greatly admiredpeers from within a medallion. Auricular Cell was included in The Original Print, a series of portfolios of prints by various avant-garde artists published to promote the revival of lithography and highlight its creative impact. This illustration of an Eskimo is from a water-colour drawing by John White about 1585. White may have seen Eskimo with in Frobisher's or Davis's voyages. Martin Frobisher was an English seaman and privateer who made three voyages in the 1500s to the New World looking for the North-west Passage. He probably sighted Resolution Island near Labrador in north-eastern Canada, before entering Frobisher Bay and landing on present-day Baffin Island. John Davis or Davys was one of the chief English navigators of Elizabeth I. He led several voyages to discover the Northwest Passage and served as pilot and captain on both Dutch and English voyages to the East Indies. He discovered the Falkland Islands in August 1592. .

Standing Turkish Youth 1844 William James Müller British In this vigorous, vibrant study, William James Müller (a British painter of Prussian descent) captured the appearance of a young man he encountered on his travels in Lycia, in southwestern Anatolia, where the artist journeyed with the archaeologist Charles Fellows in the early 1840s. Müller applied loose, broad, wet washes to his thick, textured artist's board with some rapidity, forming the sky with fluid strokes of blue and capturing the appearance of an orange tree with a few succinct circles of bright fruit.
