Visiting a Friend in Autumn Okada Beisanjin Japanese The water swirls beneath the pilings of the house on the river, the clouds encircle the mountainsides,on every branch the red leaves of autumn, the wooden gate opens to the guests.Beisanjin's poem and paintingActive in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Beisanjin created spirited works that made a colorful contribution to the late phase of Nanga painting. A rice merchant by trade, Beisanjin associated with the sophisticated aesthetes of Osaka's literati circles, which inspired him to cultivate his avocation of painting. His brusque and seemingly naive brushwork has a certain power that captures the vivacious spirit of Osaka, a flourishing center of commerce and finance. Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) wrote that Beisanjin's paintings "are not what one could call technically accomplished, but he made pictures that are like a sudden revelation of nature's meaning within the heart.". Satyr's Family from Bacchanales, or Satyr's Games 1763 France. This set of four etchings may refer to ancient bas-reliefs Fragonard saw while visiting Rome with an important antiquarian, the AbbÈ de Saint Non (see 1926.453, .455, and .456). The size of the paired oval and rectangular reliefsóone or more of which might derive from ancient engraved cameos instead of large-scale sculpturesóremains ambiguous, although hidden objects in the surrounding foliage suggest a large scale. Regardless of their source, the popularity of Fragonardís printed reliefs reflected the taste for Neoclassicism in France at this time.. Etching on ivory laid paper . Jean Honoré Fragonard

The Swing, 1782. Nicolas Delaunay (French, 1739-1792), after Jean-Honoré Fragonard (French, 1732-1806). Engraving; This large print, based on a painting by Fragonard, symbolizes the pleasure-seeking and frivolous aspects of Rococo art. Unbeknownst to the man pushing the swing, a suitor reclining in the bushes gets a glimpse under the woman's skirts as she flies through the air, losing her shoe. Contemporary viewers would have understood the association of the lost shoe with sexual dalliance, a motif reinforced by other elements within the image, such as the cavorting nude figures on the base of the statue of a cupid who gestures "hush." Delaunay's work is extremely successful in translating the qualities of a painting into the more restricted vocabulary of graphic techniques. He masterfully transposed Fragonard's charming composition, retaining all of the movement and verve of the painting. Using a rich variety of hatchings, cross-hatchings, and dots, Delaunay conveyed the tonal range
