The Last Look of John Donne Marsden Hartley (American, 1877-1943). The Last Look of John Donne, 1940. Oil on academy board, 28 1/8 x 22 in. (71.4 x 55.9 cm). Marsden Hartley occasionally painted imaginary portraits of historical figures such as this one of John Donne, the seventeenth-century English metaphysical poet and dean of Saint Pauls Cathedral in London. The solemn portrait is based on an engraving of Donnes carved tomb effigy that was the frontispiece for a collection of his sermons. The shrouded body is presented in a palette of blues and whites, cool colors evocative of death, while the striated pattern of folds approximates the hard, carved stone of the tomb. American Art 1940

Saint Joseph with the Flowering Rod Jusepe de Ribera (Spanish, 1591-1652). Saint Joseph with the Flowering Rod, early 1630s. Oil on panel, 46 x 35 3/4 in. (116.8 x 90.8 cm). Called Lo Spagnoletto” (the little Spaniard) by his Italian clientele, the Spanish-born and trained Ribera made his career in Naples, where his major patron, the Duke of Osuna, served as viceroy to the Spanish Bourbon rulers of southern Italy. Following a Spanish tradition initiated by the famed painter El Greco (1541-1614), Ribera painted individual portraits of Christ’s intimates, including his father Saint Joseph and his disciples. According to apocryphal sources, suitors for the Virgin Mary’s hand were to present rods to the high priest of the Temple. When Joseph’s rod bloomed, he was identified as her betrothed. Ribera conveys the unexpected wonder of the moment with the lighting from above and the aged Joseph’s questioning hand gesture. European Art early 1630s

Zuleika John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). Zuleika, ca. 1906. Translucent and opaque watercolor, 10 x 13 15/16 in. (25.4 x 35.4 cm). One of the young girlsSargent’s nieces and the daughters of friendswho were often part of his traveling party posed for this watercolor, wearing one of the costumes he had purchased in the Middle East earlier in the year. The work’s title references a woman featured in biblical and Arabic literature who was often portrayed as enamored of her beautiful slave, Joseph. Sargent used lush colors and loose brushwork to describe her Turkish-style pantaloons and silk overdress, and the cashmere shawl on which she lies, to evoke a mood of sensual ease and sumptuous pleasure.
